If you follow the news headlines, it’s easy to get discouraged. It seems like everywhere we look, we see signs of cultural disintegration. The sexuality debate rages on, the atrocities of Planned Parenthood linger, and increasing attempts to privatize faith continue to march forward. If you’re a Christian, this can be demoralizing. But it shouldn’t be. Here’s why.
Jesus’ famous little quote in Matthew 16:18 is worth reflecting on. He says to Peter, “…on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
When Jesus talks about “gates,” he is likely thinking of typical 1st century city gates. City gates don’t move. They don’t advance. They are defensive weapons. They are designed to protect the city from an attacking enemy.
So when Jesus says “the gates of Hades will not overcome it,” he is saying Hades will not be able to withstand the advances of the church! Did you catch that? The gospel is going to continue to make inroads and the global church will continue to see growth. So cheer up! The future of the gospel is bright!
